Software Updates

I don't know about you but I dread software updates.  Microsoft updates are the scariest because while they say these updates are to improve stability, reliability and security I know the real truth. Something is going to break! Its funny how my computer will be running just fine until the little icon at the bottom of my screen starts flashing indicating a new update is available. I ignore it as long as I can but within a week or two my computer starts misbehaving so of course I HAVE to run the update. This last update broke my printer (boom drivers were gone) as well as two of my neighbors printers that I had to help fix. Then I realized it had also broke the scanning software of my network printer so I had to reinstall the software. I use MCEBUDDY to convert my TV programs to .mp4 format and it broke that too.  It hasn't been two weeks and I see the little bugger flashing again .....err wonder what will break this time.

Microsoft updates aren't the only thing that break other software either.  WordPress updates break all of my websites at one time. I have to insert a line to my functions.php file to be able to write posts and pages. After a year of this problem you would think they would have fixed the issue but I guess its on the back burner of the developers mind. It probably has something to do with the way my hosting company has the servers setup but considering they are one of the largest providers of webhosting around it should have been fixed in my opinion.  Crap WordPress 3.0 is available ...........

I use an open source classifieds plugin for a few of my sites like Ocala Horse Sales and the last time there was an update it broke the system.  Fortunately the developer got right on it and the problem was fixed within a couple of days. That was the second time it had broke (it was down for months the first time) after an update so I will be really leery with future updates.

WordPress makes it really easy to update your plugins so it is hard to resist when they come available. I had a couple of sites highjacked because I did not update some of the plugins and you talk about a real pain the in butt. You have to get the security team involved and they send you letters telling you to make sure you update to the latest version of Word Press and that all of your plugins are updated Blah Blah Blah. I found a site later that had been hacked and I just deleted the entire thing instead of getting them involved again.

Well guess I better get updated and fixing, too many websites here I come.
